If you are down in Miami next week… (alas I will not be!)

Ulterior Gallery presents two women painters: Maryam Amiryani (b.1967, Shiraz, Iran) and Jen Mazza (b.1972, Washington D.C.) at NADA Miami. For Mazza, this will be her art fair debut and her first introduction to this region in her almost thirty-year career.

Jen Mazza will showcase a selection of figurative paintings including her 2004 series, Nuit Blanche, which represent an incredibly significant moment in her life and work. This series marks the transitional moment when she is shifting away from depictions of the landscape that had been her prior focus. Mazza instead began painting and drawing women’s bodies, often using her own body as model. “The Nuit Blanche series was deeply important in the development of my work. The materiality of the figurative painting crosses over directly into my current practice, as does a subtle sense of disruption—queering—as both noun and verb, I am always trying to embody something in terms of this otherness.” In these paintings, Mazza, who came out as queer in 2000, embodies a subtle dissociation by using her left hand and its mirror image to reenact what at first seems to be a first-person perspective in which two hands and arms adorned in kid gloves* engage in performative acts.

The gloves, acting as a second skin, protect animated ligaments while simultaneously restricting their gestures. The pearls and white leather that cover contorted arms suggest a mode of hiding in plain sight that leverages opacity. Yet, exposed flesh tones peak through the disguise, offering a vulnerable glimpse into the reality underneath. In this work, which conveys the conceptual continuity and growth of her practice over the past three decades, Mazza depicts the act of wrestling with one’s self, and renegotiating the possibilities of past and future.

Please visit us at Booth B206 at NADA Miami next week!

By the time I met Geoffrey he was a wizened and older, so it is fascinating to see the young Geoffrey pictured in these photographs with a certain wildness. His touch is visible in each carefully collected object such that I still feel him to be a quiet presence in the room. 💙☁️

So I have out the studio so much longer than expected. Fingers crossed those engineers solve this new mystery - After they found a hidden vault, nothing should surprise them!

I am so grateful for this gift of a temporary studio, and grateful for all my friends that have helped out or given me moral support during the last two weeks so I can get the final work in motion for the January show! 💫

I am thrilled to announce that what started off as great conversation and became a great collaboration is now going to the next level! Save the date for my upcoming show in January.

I’m really looking forward to working with @ulteriorgallery and the fabulous @tt_mega and excited to be showing alongside so many artists I have come to admire! 🍾🥂✨💫

Happy last day of Pride Month! 🌈✨

Jen Mazza, the artist new to Ulterior Gallery, will be having her first solo exhibition n January 2025. January symbolizes a new beginning, and we are excited to welcome Mazza to the gallery and to present her new paintings in new year.

This image is an example of one of Mazza’s earlier paintings, titled “Red Letter #7” (2007). Mazza painted this series when she created figurative images as her main subject—focusing on bodies and small objects. She explains, “The materiality of the figurative painting crosses over directly into my current practice, and the verb ‘queering’ is one I respond to in terms of ‘queering the pitch,’ trying to embody something in terms of otherness.” This depiction of fingers holding open a page in a book has had emotional resonance for many.

More coming up in 2025!
